Saying goodbye to cold and dreary Wisconsin, our crew (with tees and shorts packed) took off for gorgeous Cabo, Mexico to shoot Jockey.com’s March 2010 catalog. The endless sunshine and fantastic weather created a beautiful canvas that truly brought our newest collections to life—exactly what Eric Olson, our creative director, envisioned. “I love the strength of our product photographed outside in the natural sun, but I like to balance it with indoor locations as well. The open-air homes and villas provided a perfect inside/outside feel.”

As they traveled north up the coast, one of their favorite stops was Cerritos, a small surfing area. “This is where we shot the women’s Minis and Ultimates® collections at a cool surf hut. People were out surfing, learning how to surf and just relaxing…it was a blast,” says Eric. Other great locations for shooting, hanging out and getting the yummiest local eats were Todos Santos and Hotel California.

Eric gives huge credit to the entire crew for pulling off this amazing shoot. Long days of scouting, shooting and even run-ins with stingrays! Oh yes, a trip to the hospital for intense cleaning and shots for both Kelly and Victor (two extremely brave souls – heard it was so painful). In the end, the photography turned out incredible and we’ve never been more proud of our spring offering. You’ll love the fresh pops of colors and prints. Plus, we’re launching brand new men’s and women’s collections that are sure to become your favorites.

Hope you enjoy seeing the making of our March 2010 catalog. And, if you haven’t already, be sure to sign-up for our mailing list. We’re sending our March catalog next week! Request a catalog or check out the online version now.

Happy March and bring on spring!

From the athletes in Vancouver to everyday athletes in our very own backyard, we are both amazed and inspired by what people can achieve when they put their minds to it. We also understand that we’re all human. We get too busy, super stressed and have schedules that are jam-packed with so much “stuff”. Many times, working out and making an effort to live a healthy lifestyle gets pushed to the side.

We’re challenging you to put your health first. Find a sport or activity that interests you…and give it a whirl. What do you have to lose? Whether it’s a couple times a week or 30 minutes a day, take some time for you. You deserve it!

For those that are just getting started or simply stuck in a rut, here are some tips from our REAL athletes who helped launch Jockey’s 2010 activewear collection. (They really know their stuff.)

WORKOUT TIPS:
When it comes to working out, the best thing you can do is set tangible goals. Instead of saying “I want to run a fast mile”, say “I want to run a 6 min mile” or “I want to lower my body fat”, say “I want to lower my body fat by 4%”. It makes training so much easier and when you set goals in that way, you are able to stay motivated!!!! - AJ, Boxer

Results will vary. What works for one person doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for another. But, one thing remains constant, do nothing and you can guarantee your results. - Sabin, Skateboarder

Have a “plan” going into the workout….if you are feeling tired or unmotivated going in with a plan or a purpose for the workout (even if it is just an “easy” day) will keep you going. - Jenny, Long Distance Runner

Consistency! It takes so long to get to a certain level of fitness and so short to lose it. – Keri, Rock climber

Eat a decent meal (not too heavy) about 90 minutes before your workout. Your body needs fuel! Plus, drink plenty of water before, during and after. – Marc, Boxer

Work the core no matter what you are doing. - Sandra, Cyclist

Try not to cut workouts short, you’ll be proud of yourself and feel great after you complete your whole workout. It’s a mental game. – Stacey, Swimmer

Keep your core muscles contracted in whatever workout you do! Walking, running, squads, push-ups, etc. - LaCrisha, Runner

Breathe – Jaime, Ballet Dancer

We asked our athletes how it felt to participate in our Jockey® activewear photo shoot. We wanted to know their take on using “real people/athletes” vs. professional models. Here’s what some of them had to say:

“I think we are all REAL ATHLETES. Those of us who enjoy and participate regularly in physical activity enjoy the benefits physically and emotionally as well as socially all year long. I love that more companies are starting the “real people” campaigns. I have seen many friends affected by eating disorders and think that to the extent we can change the perception of what is healthy and fit, we can provide people with more realistic expectations and goals. I also think that everyone needs to look inward and be happy with who they are and compare themselves with others or social norms less. I love that Jockey is recognizing the “real” people out there who are working hard to feel good, be healthy and happy with themself. THANK YOU!” - Keri, Rock Climber

“Whatever motivates and inspires others is my take. Whether you like to skate in a park or prefer to do yoga, as long as the reaction is positive, that’s what it’s all about.” – Sabin, Skateboarder

“First, I have to say that I had an absolute blast being a “model” for the Jockey® shoot! Everyone was so nice and friendly and made everything fun. Even though the professional models most likely make things easier for the photographers as they probably don’t ask so many questions and know what they are looking for, I feel that the “real athletes” capture the “essence” better – instead of “pretending” to run, I was really running, focused, and thoroughly enjoying it!” – Jenny, Long Distance Runner

“I think by using real athletes in photo shoots shoppers don’t have to be convinced to buy something. They can see a true taste of what items look like on the “real” people who wear them.” – Stacy, Swimmer

“My body has been shaped the way it is from the sports that I have played. A professional model pretends to be something they are not or plays the part to appease the general public. They become a prop that is fictional and unrealistic. A real athlete model stands for something that is pure, honest and true.” – Kara, Dancer

“The real athlete’s motivation for doing what he or she does is internal, while the stereotypical model finds their motivation externally from other sources. The genuine athletes do what they do, no matter what the conditions are, no matter if anyone is watching or cheering for them, no matter what time of the day, no matter how they feel, they do it. Many times, it can be very lonely, where it is you versus yourself; the real athlete tries to be better than last time, at each practice, at each press, at each mile. They push themselves to be faster, stronger, and more agile. When they realize that they have given all they can and can give no more, that’s when they know they have done their best.” – Neil, Racquetball player

“I think that using “real athletes” instead of models for this shoot made a lot of sense. Most athletes are muscular and fit. I think this is an important quality when modeling athletic clothing. While a professional model may be in good shape, they do not have the same build.” –Julie, Soccer

What’s your opinion on using real people in a photo shoot instead of professional models?
