Let’s Kick Breast Cancer in the Butt

This year, social media is part of my job. Jockey on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and our Jockey Exposed blog are now my everyday work routine. Never did I think that social media, when it came to Jockey, could become so personal and give me little warm fuzzies.
Earlier this year, Krista Colvin, who also is in social media, sent me a nice little DM (direct message) on Twitter. She basically introduced herself and was like “hey, I can see that you’re new to the game…let me know if you ever have any questions.” I was tickled pink. How cool?! My first Twitter friend =) and also a resource to help me through this crazy world of social.
Unfortunately, months later, I received an e-mail from Krista informing me that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. I was completely shocked…and just sad. She’s so young, fun, witty, loving…breast cancer?! What the heck?
The great thing about Krista, though, is her fighting attitude. To help her cope with the daily struggles of having cancer and crappy chemo, she started a blog “Putting on my big girl panties and kicking breast cancer in the ass”. Love it!
She also has the most amazing support system. Her close-knit community of Camas, WA (about 15 miles outside of Portland) has really rallied around her; paying her visits, cooking meals and just showing their love in every way. The Camas ladies decided to put on a downtown event in honor of fighting breast cancer. “Party with a Purpose” was born.
Party with a Purpose was a “shop, give and get gorgeous event”! It was a fun and powerful night for women, with all proceeds benefiting local breast cancer charities. The event included raffles, live music, girly photo shoots, beauty treatments and massages, survivor stories, a blessing board, panty decorating and so much more. Pretty awesome, hey?!
I’m sure you noticed the “panty decorating” (it kind of stands out). As a real-life representation of her blog, Krista wanted to have a huge clothesline in the center of downtown. Then, women who are fighting and surviving breast cancer, could decorate the underwear in honor of their fight.
This is where Jockey® really stepped up to the plate. I was so happy to deliver the news to Krista that we would donate 100+ styles of women’s pink underwear for her event. It was one of those times that I felt really lucky and blessed to be working for Jockey and involved in social media. I really felt like I was helping out a friend.
The event took place on May 20, 2010 and was a huge success. Hooray! AND, the undies were absolutely adorable. If you’d like to learn more about the Camas event, check them out on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/camasGNO
Cheers to putting big girl on panties and kicking breast cancer in the hinder! And, to Krista, everyone here at Jockey® is rooting for you. Be well, keep smiling!
