In the past, fashion in men’s underwear was an afterthought. Typically, fashionable underwear for men meant the waistband was still attached to the garment.
Recently, men, like women, are more conscientious about the wearing experience and its fashion influence. This is noted by Sean R., senior director for men’s design at Jockey, “You wear different shirts for different occasions and underwear is no different. Now more than ever, men are opinionated and demanding about what they want. It’s our job to facilitate their desires.”
Offering 109 styles of men’s underwear, you might wonder where we get inspiration for each. No matter the design or color, each pair of Jockey underwear starts with three core components: comfort, fit and quality. Once we have that, we design.
According to Sean, “Our biggest inspiration for men’s underwear comes from trend in the fashion market, and of course, identifying the need for a new product he can wear in his wardrobe. Whether it’s a streamlined, casual, stylish or compression fit, Jockey offers underwear to support his need for any occasion.”
Like the rest of your wardrobe, underwear too is dictated by seasons of the year. Sean points out, “Based on the season, fabrics and colors are the biggest differentiators. With colors, we feature two pallets: spring/summer and fall/winter.” The colors are influenced by trends of the season and something topical. For example, Jungle Green (spring/summer) or Dark Crimson (fall/winter). Each name takes on a masculine identity, assuring that you can splash in some color and still be manly. As for the fit, Sean proudly shares, “It’s seasonless.”
Wondering what the next breakthrough in men’s underwear will be? Unfortunately, Sean couldn’t spill everything. But, he did say; you’ll see more chemical finishes, light quick dry fabrics, diamond white, easy care, moisture-wicking and antimicrobial features.

Athletes striking a pose in their undies shouldn’t surprise you. In a recent USA TODAY article, “Athletes not shy to strut in underwear ads,” it is highlighted that jocks exposed in their underwear is becoming more commonplace.
For a BRIEF trip down underwear lane: In the 1970’s Jockey introduced the first ad of a pro athlete posing in their skivvies. The print ad featured Hall of Fame pitcher, Jim Palmer. Palmer’s ad was the first display of a pro athlete in their underwear. Palmer modeled the Elance bikini brief, the most provocative of the Jockey fashion line.
These days, pro quarterback Tim Tebow has been sporting Jockey underwear. The college gridiron star and Heisman Trophy winner joined Jockey as the spokesman of our Jockey staycool collection – our newest line of men’s and women’s temperature regulating underwear and t-shirts.
