A brief look back
Comfortable, supportive and a breakthrough in underwear, the brief was an immediate success when it first hit store shelves in the 1930s. Not surprisingly, this classic style still reigns supreme today.

It started in 1934
Jockey’s Apparel Engineer and Longtime Vice President Arthur Kneibler received a postcard with a man in a European-style swimsuit. This simple image inspired the invention of the one and only Jockey(R) brief.
Kneibler felt this bikini-style design could work as underwear for the common man. And, so, he worked with his team to develop the Jockey (or Jockey short) as it was then called. According to Kneibler, it was scientifically designed “such that it cannot be distorted on the
body by either muscle action or the wearing of clothing over it.” As for the knitted fabric, “its elasticity is needed to make Jockey conform to body lines… its absorbent and quick-drying qualities make for both comfort and cleanliness.”
The popular choice
The brief was an instant sensation at stores. Shoppers bought all the briefs they could find—even taking them out of window displays! Interestingly, part of the brief’s initial success was due to its packaging. It came in individual packs, which made grabbing a pair of underwear—something that could be embarrassing—as simple as picking up the newspaper.
And, as they say, the rest is history…
