AJ’s love for sports and fitness started in high school as she competed in softball, volleyball, basketball, track and cross country. She continued on to play Division 1 softball at Sam Houston State University.

In December 2008, at age 26, she took up boxing which then led her to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) training in July of 2009. Her workouts include sparring, bag work, cardio and strength training. Don’t be fooled by her all-American pretty face, because this girl is one hard-hitter. She trains 2-3 times per day, 5-6 days per week! Cardio sessions in the morning, followed by midday boxing and Jiu Jitsu/wrestling at night. She mainly works out with a fellow fighter but welcomes anyone that her coaches suggest. If she could fit one more thing into her day, it’d definitely be more stretching. When she’s in the ring, comfort is the most important for her workout clothes. She needs to be focused and free from any distractions.

How she keeps motivated? “I just love the sensation of feeling like you’re about to break and then pushing through it! Also, it may sound strange, but failing helps keep me motivated. It makes me strive to do better, and no one is perfect so I will always have something to work on!” says AJ.

She’s currently training for her next fight on February 20, 2010. Her heart is set on winning the Golden Gloves this spring and then turning pro!

For AJ, being fit “is all about finding balance between life and training. It’s very easy to become obsessed and overwhelmed with “getting in shape”. You just have to make sure it’s a healthy obsession!” Besides working out, she loves are spending time outdoors, watching funny movies, being with her boyfriend and going out for Mexican food.

Workout advice from AJ:
I just want to say when it comes to working out, the best thing you can do is set tangible goals. Instead of saying “I want to run a fast mile”, say “I want to run a 6min mile”, or “I want to lower my body fat”, say “I want to lower my body fat by 4%”. It makes training so much easier and when you set goals in that way, you are able to stay motivated!!!!

***Thanks for sharing your story AJ. Your energy and passion are simply amazing. Good luck on February 20th and at the Golden Gloves this spring. You’re already a pro in our eyes!***
